As air conditioning contractors, one of the most common questions we get asked is, “What can I do to better maintain my air conditioner?” The answer to this question is simple – you need to change your air filters regularly. How often you should do this depends on a variety of factors, including:
- The overall quality of your indoor air
- How many pets live with you in your home
- The type of air filter you use
- The number of people living in your home
- Air pollution levels and any construction activity in or near your home
Most air conditioning contractors will agree that if you use basic 1″ to 3″ filters, you should change them every 30 to 60 days. However, if you or someone in your home deals with allergies, we suggest either upgrading the filters you use or changing them more frequently. If you live in a remote area or you have a vacation home, changing your filters just once a year may be sufficient.
